NBA Rookie Zach Edey Shines in Preseason Debut as Grizzlies Defeat Mavericks 121-116

In his NBA preseason debut, rookie Zach Edey helped lead the Memphis Grizzlies to a 121-116 victory over the Dallas Mavericks on Monday night. The 7-foot-4 center, playing his first game in the Grizzlies’ navy blue and yellow, contributed six points, four rebounds, a block, and a steal in an encouraging first outing.

Edey, drafted as the No. 9 overall pick in the 2024 NBA Draft after a stellar senior year at Purdue, showed glimpses of the skills that made him a top prospect. During his final college season, the towering center averaged an impressive 25 points, 12 rebounds, and 2 assists per game while shooting 62% from the field. His height and athleticism, combined with his shot-blocking ability, make him a valuable asset for the Grizzlies, who ranked No. 19 in defensive rating last season.

In Monday’s game, Edey’s impact was felt on both ends of the floor. While his six points may seem modest, his defensive presence was crucial in limiting Dallas’ interior scoring, and his rebounding helped keep Memphis in control. At 7-foot-4, Edey is tied with San Antonio Spurs phenom Victor Wembanyama as the tallest player in the league this season, making him a unique matchup problem for opponents.

Beyond Edey’s contributions, Memphis benefitted from a strong overall team effort. Fifth-year star Ja Morant added 13 points, four rebounds, and three assists, continuing to display his leadership and playmaking abilities. Brandon Clarke provided a spark off the bench with 17 points, showcasing the team’s depth in what is shaping up to be another competitive season for the Grizzlies.

Edey’s performance is a promising sign for the Grizzlies, as the team looks to bolster its frontcourt and improve its defensive efficiency. The rookie will have plenty of opportunities to grow, and his fit within the Grizzlies’ system could help elevate them in the tough Western Conference.

The Grizzlies will continue their preseason on Thursday, October 10, when they host the Charlotte Hornets, providing Edey with another opportunity to build on his solid debut.
