Orlando Magic have dismissed head coach Jamahl Mosley following a disappointing end to their 2025–26 season, where the team squandered a 3-1 series lead and was eliminated in the first round of the Eastern Conference playoffs by the Detroit Pistons.
The decision, announced Monday, comes after what many within the organization viewed as a defining failure. Orlando had three opportunities to close out the series but fell short each time, including a crushing Game 6 defeat at home where they blew a 24-point second-half lead. The team’s offensive collapse in that game — missing 23 straight shots — drew loud boos from home fans and is widely believed to have sealed Mosley’s fate.
Magic president Jeff Weltman acknowledged the difficulty of the move in an official statement. “We’re grateful to Jamahl for all he’s done for the Orlando Magic,” he said. “While this was a difficult decision, we feel it’s time for a new voice and fresh perspective.”
Mosley departs as the third-winningest coach in franchise history, finishing with a 189-221 record. Only Brian Hill and Stan Van Gundy have more wins with the team. He oversaw a steady rebuild, guiding the Magic from a 22-win campaign in his first season to consistent .500-or-better finishes over the last three years, including a 45-37 record this season.
During his tenure, Mosley helped develop a young core featuring Paolo Banchero, Franz Wagner, and Jalen Suggs. The team also added key pieces like Desmond Bane, building a roster widely viewed as promising for the future.
However, recurring playoff disappointments — three straight first-round exits — ultimately overshadowed that progress. Injuries also played a role this season, particularly with Wagner missing the final three games of the Pistons series, all losses.
Questions around Mosley’s relationship with Banchero surfaced during the season, though the star forward had publicly downplayed any tension, describing their disagreements as constructive and rooted in competitiveness.
Despite flashes of growth, Orlando’s shortcomings were evident, particularly in shooting. The team ranked 27th in three-point percentage this season, highlighting a key area in need of improvement.
Mosley, who still had two years remaining on his contract extension signed in 2024, leaves after five seasons at the helm. His exit signals a shift in direction for a franchise that believes its current core is ready to take the next step.
With speculation already building, names like Billy Donovan — recently available after leaving the Chicago Bulls — could emerge as potential replacements as Orlando searches for a fresh start.
