A night of high-stakes playoff basketball saw the Indiana Pacers knock out the Cleveland Cavaliers in emphatic fashion while the Oklahoma City Thunder staged a dramatic late comeback to edge past the Denver Nuggets and take control of their Western Conference semifinal series.
In Cleveland, Tyrese Haliburton led the Pacers with a commanding 31-point performance, including a barrage of six three-pointers, to seal a 114-105 victory and clinch a 4-1 series win. The top-seeded Cavaliers, who had dominated the regular season with 64 wins, were left stunned as their playoff run ended abruptly on their home court.
Haliburton’s explosive second quarter, where he nailed five-of-five from beyond the arc, turned the tide after the Cavs had built a 19-point lead. Supported by Pascal Siakam’s 21 points and a double-double from Aaron Nesmith (13 points, 13 rebounds), the Pacers overwhelmed Cleveland with a 33-20 third-quarter run and never looked back.
“We’re talking about eight more wins for an NBA championship,” said Pacers head coach Rick Carlisle. “The league is wide open this year. We’ve just got to keep believing.”
Cleveland’s Donovan Mitchell battled through an ankle injury to score 35 points, trying to rally his team with a fourth-quarter push. But the Cavaliers’ continued struggles from deep — hitting only nine of 35 three-point attempts — sealed their fate.
“They were the better team,” Cavaliers coach Kenny Atkinson admitted. “We didn’t get to the level we wanted. We took a jump, but now we’ve got to figure out how to get over this hump.”
The Pacers now await the winner of the Boston Celtics vs. New York Knicks series in the Eastern Conference Finals.
Meanwhile, in the West, the Oklahoma City Thunder delivered a late blitz to down the defending champion Denver Nuggets 112-105 and take a 3-2 lead in the series. Despite a monumental 44-point, 15-rebound effort from Nikola Jokic, the Nuggets faltered in the final quarter, outscored 34-19 by the surging Thunder.
Shai Gilgeous-Alexander matched Haliburton’s scoring with 31 points of his own, leading a balanced Thunder attack that saw six players in double figures. “We just trusted in our principles,” said Gilgeous-Alexander. “We got one tonight and we got one more.”
The Nuggets, now facing elimination, must win Game 6 at home on Thursday to keep their title defense alive. “This is a really disappointing loss,” said interim head coach David Adelman. “We have to bounce back quickly.”
With the playoffs intensifying, both conferences are poised for explosive finishes as new contenders rise and giants fall.
