The Phoenix Suns, currently 11th in the Western Conference with a 14-14 record, are actively seeking roster changes ahead of the February 6 trade deadline. As Kevin Durant aims for his third NBA championship, the team is reportedly shopping center Jusuf Nurkic in hopes of improving their chances of playoff contention.
According to Duane Rankin of The Arizona Republic, the Suns are exploring potential trades involving Nurkic, who was acquired last season in a three-team deal with the Milwaukee Bucks and Portland Trail Blazers. The Suns are reportedly targeting centers Jonas Valanciunas of the Washington Wizards and Nikola Vucevic of the Chicago Bulls as potential replacements.
Nurkic, nicknamed The Bosnian Beast, has posted modest averages this season, contributing 9.1 points, 9.6 rebounds, 1.7 assists, and 1.0 steals per game. While he has split starting duties with Mason Plumlee and Oso Ighodaro, his performance has been inconsistent. His contract, which runs through the 2025-26 season, makes him a tradeable asset for teams seeking a skilled passer among big men.
Both Valanciunas and Vucevic offer distinct skill sets. Valanciunas is regarded as an elite rebounder, while Vucevic is known for his scoring ability. However, neither excels defensively—a concern shared with Nurkic.
Amid the Suns’ struggles, Bradley Beal has also found himself at the center of trade speculation. Acquired before the 2023-24 season, Beal has been plagued by injuries, appearing in only 18 games and averaging 18.4 points, 3.9 rebounds, and 3.1 assists. Despite rumours linking him to potential trades, Beal remains committed to the Suns.
“Until one of them comes to say something to me or talks to me, it’s just out there,” Beal said in response to the chatter. “I’m a Phoenix Sun, and I’m here in the uniform. I don’t pay attention to that.”
The Suns are reportedly interested in Miami Heat star Jimmy Butler, whose name has emerged as one of the most significant trade possibilities this season. If Phoenix pursues Butler, Beal could be a key piece in the deal, though his no-trade clause complicates negotiations.
