Golden State Warriors head coach Steve Kerr has expressed optimism over the potential return of Stephen Curry before the end of the regular season, offering a much-needed boost to a struggling side battling for play-in contention.
After missing nearly two months with a right knee injury, the 38-year-old guard took a significant step forward by մասնակցating in a full practice session on Tuesday. The session included 5-on-5 scrimmaging, albeit at a controlled pace, as the team carefully manages his recovery.
“Sure, yeah, absolutely,” Kerr said when asked about Curry’s chances of returning before the regular season concludes. “It’s a good step for him… it’s just a progression from here.”
Curry, who has been sidelined since January 30 after a game against Detroit, confirmed his recovery is moving in the right direction. “I’m headed in the right direction,” he said during a video call.
Despite the positive signs, Kerr ruled him out of the Warriors’ upcoming home game against San Antonio and the following night’s clash with Cleveland. With only five games remaining in the regular season, Curry is unlikely to feature in back-to-back fixtures, making his return a carefully timed decision.
The Warriors have struggled in his absence, posting a 13-23 record without their star guard this season. During his latest injury spell, the team has gone 9-16, highlighting his critical importance. Curry continues to lead the team in scoring, averaging 27.2 points per game.
Compounding their challenges, Golden State has also been without Jimmy Butler, who suffered a season-ending ACL injury in February. The team’s record without Butler stands at 13-24, further underscoring their depleted roster.
For teammates, Curry’s presence alone has already lifted morale. Forward Gui Santos emphasized the impact: “We have a lot more confidence when we have a guy like Steph out on the court… I hope he’s out there with us soon.”
Kerr echoed that sentiment, noting the intangible effect of Curry’s return to practice. “The gym was bouncier… everyone’s spirits are lifted when he’s playing.”
As the regular season nears its end, the Warriors’ hopes of making a deeper push may hinge on Curry’s fitness. Even a limited return could prove decisive for a team eager to regain momentum at the most crucial stage of the campaign.
