Former NBA champion Stephen Jackson does not believe the Golden State Warriors’ current roster is capable of competing for another championship and has suggested a blockbuster move involving franchise superstar Stephen Curry.
Speaking on a recent episode of the All The Smoke podcast, Jackson was asked whether Golden State could challenge for the title with its existing squad. His response was a firm “nah,” before he proposed the San Antonio Spurs as a potential destination for Curry.
Jackson believes the Warriors could use such a deal to begin planning for the future while receiving enough assets to remain competitive.
“San Antonio for me,” Jackson said on the podcast. “You got De’Aaron Fox, they can package one of those, and I ain’t even talking about Harper, or Castle, they got 2 big draft picks this year, so they did well in the draft. So they got the pieces to move for a Steph with De’Aaron Fox, I think that would be great.”
A move to San Antonio would potentially unite Curry with Victor Wembanyama, creating a combination featuring one of the NBA’s most accomplished perimeter shooters alongside the Spurs’ star big man.
San Antonio also has young players such as Stephon Castle and Dylan Harper, giving the franchise several potential assets should it ever attempt to put together an offer for Curry.
From Golden State’s perspective, Jackson’s proposal would represent a dramatic change in direction. Curry has been the central figure in the Warriors’ success and has won four NBA championships during his career.
However, continued changes to the roster have made it more difficult for Golden State to keep pace with the competition in the Western Conference.
A hypothetical package featuring De’Aaron Fox and draft compensation could provide the Warriors with an opportunity to begin a softer rebuild rather than immediately dropping out of contention.
There is no indication in the information provided that either Golden State or San Antonio is actively pursuing such a transaction, meaning Jackson’s idea remains purely theoretical.
Still, his comments raise an intriguing question about how the Warriors could approach the closing stages of Curry’s career if they no longer believe their current roster can contend for another championship.
For now, Curry remains Golden State’s franchise centerpiece, while the prospect of pairing him with Wembanyama in San Antonio exists only as Jackson’s blockbuster trade proposal.
