The Oklahoma City Thunder will begin their NBA championship defence without starting guard Jalen Williams, who remains sidelined as he recovers from off-season wrist surgery. The 24-year-old, who played a crucial role in guiding OKC to its first-ever NBA title last season, was left off the team’s opening-night roster for Tuesday’s matchup against Kevin Durant and the Houston Rockets.
Williams underwent surgery earlier this summer to address a wrist injury he carried through much of the Thunder’s playoff run. Although the team has not released an official timeline for his return, ESPN’s Tim MacMahon reported that the injury is not expected to keep him out for an extended period.
The third-year guard from Santa Clara emerged as one of the NBA’s breakout stars during Oklahoma City’s championship campaign. Averaging 21.6 points, 5.3 rebounds, 5.1 assists, and 1.6 steals per game, Williams provided consistent scoring support alongside MVP Shai Gilgeous-Alexander.
His efficient shooting splits — 48.4% from the field, 36.5% from beyond the arc, and 78.9% from the line — and defensive versatility earned him his first All-Star selection, All-NBA Third Team honours, and a spot on the All-Defensive Second Team.
In the postseason, Williams’ production dipped slightly as he battled the lingering effects of his wrist injury, with his three-point percentage falling to 30.4%. Despite the setback, he continued to contribute key performances during the Finals, where the Thunder edged past the Boston Celtics in a thrilling seven-game series to secure the championship. At times, he was seen wearing a brace and heavy tape on his shooting hand, underscoring the grit that defined OKC’s historic playoff run.
The Thunder, led by the dynamic Gilgeous-Alexander and a deep supporting cast, set a franchise record with 68 regular-season wins last year. Their blend of youth and composure made them the youngest championship-winning team in NBA history, a milestone that has set lofty expectations heading into the new campaign.
In recognition of his rapid rise, Oklahoma City rewarded Williams in the offseason with a five-year rookie maximum contract extension worth up to $287 million. The deal cements him as a cornerstone of the franchise’s long-term plans alongside Gilgeous-Alexander and Chet Holmgren.
While Williams’ absence will be felt early on, the Thunder remain optimistic that their young star will return soon to rejoin their title defence. For now, OKC will rely on its depth and balance to maintain momentum as they embark on what promises to be another exciting season.
