The defending champion Oklahoma City Thunder continued its commanding playoff run with a 125-107 victory over the Los Angeles Lakers on Thursday night, taking a 2-0 lead in the Western Conference semifinal series.
Led by balanced scoring and a dominant third-quarter surge, the Thunder improved to a perfect 6-0 in this year’s playoffs and now head to Los Angeles with firm control of the series.
Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and Chet Holmgren each scored 22 points for Oklahoma City, while Ajay Mitchell added 20 and Jared McCain chipped in with 18 in another polished team performance.
The Lakers once again faced major challenges with injuries. Scoring champion Luka Doncic remained sidelined indefinitely because of a strained left hamstring, while reserve forward Jarred Vanderbilt was also unavailable after dislocating the pinkie finger on his right hand during Game 1.
Despite the absences, Los Angeles stayed competitive for much of the contest behind strong performances from Austin Reaves and LeBron James. Reaves bounced back impressively from a difficult shooting display in the series opener, finishing with 31 points on an efficient 10-of-16 shooting effort. James contributed 23 points after scoring 27 in Game 1.
The contest shifted dramatically midway through the third quarter during a tense sequence involving Gilgeous-Alexander. With the Lakers leading 63-61, the Thunder star became entangled with Reaves and was initially called for his fourth foul. Following a review, officials upgraded the call to a Flagrant 1 due to Gilgeous-Alexander’s follow-through. Thunder guard Alex Caruso also received a technical foul during the incident.
When Gilgeous-Alexander exited the floor shortly afterward, the Lakers appeared to have momentum with a 65-61 advantage. Instead, Oklahoma City responded with its most dominant stretch of the game.
The Thunder erupted on both ends of the court, outscoring Los Angeles 32-15 during the remainder of the third quarter. One of the key moments came on a fast break when Holmgren found Jaylin Williams trailing behind the play for a three-pointer while drawing a foul. Williams converted the four-point play to extend Oklahoma City’s lead to 85-74 and energize the home crowd.
The Lakers attempted a late comeback and trimmed the deficit to five points in the fourth quarter, but the Thunder quickly regained control with its defensive intensity and efficient transition offense.
Now holding a 2-0 series advantage, Oklahoma City heads into Game 3 on Saturday with momentum firmly on its side, while the Lakers face mounting pressure to respond at home without the injured Doncic.
