The Minnesota Timberwolves delayed their Sunday night game against the San Antonio Spurs by one hour due to an issue with the court at Target Center. The game, originally scheduled for a 7 p.m. tipoff local time (6:30 a.m. IST), was pushed back to allow staff to replace the playing surface.
The problem was discovered during the Spurs’ morning shootaround, according to Timberwolves spokesman Patrick Rees. The team made the decision to delay the game three hours before its start to ensure the replacement court could be delivered and installed. Target Center, the Timberwolves’ home since 1990, has rarely faced such logistical challenges during its history.
Despite the delay, fans were reassured that the game would proceed safely. “Player safety is our top priority, and we’re taking the necessary steps to ensure the court meets all standards,” Rees said.
Meanwhile, Timberwolves star Anthony Edwards made headlines for a different reason. The NBA fined him $100,000 on Sunday for using profanity during a live television interview following the team’s narrow 113-112 victory over the Houston Rockets on Friday.
This marks the third fine for Edwards in as many weeks, with the league citing a pattern of inappropriate language during media appearances. The NBA noted in its announcement that the increased penalty reflects “Edwards’ history of using profane language during media interviews.”
Edwards has faced criticism for his behaviour during postgame interactions. Despite his on-court brilliance, including key plays in the victory over Houston, his repeated fines highlight the NBA’s stance on maintaining professionalism during media engagements.
The court delay and Edwards’ fine add to an eventful week for the Timberwolves, who are striving to maintain momentum in a competitive Western Conference. The delayed game against the Spurs and ongoing media scrutiny around Edwards are sure to keep the team in the spotlight as they navigate their season.
Fans will be hoping that the Timberwolves can focus on their on-court performances while addressing off-court distractions. For now, ensuring a safe playing environment and maintaining discipline in public interactions remain top priorities for the franchise.
