Victor Wembanyama has etched his name into NBA history, becoming the league’s first-ever unanimous Defensive Player of the Year (DPOY), capping a season of total defensive dominance for the San Antonio Spurs star.

The 22-year-old center, already regarded as one of the most disruptive defenders in the game, received every first-place vote, a rare feat that underscores his impact. After finishing second in last year’s voting and seeing a previous campaign cut short due to a medical issue, Wembanyama left no room for debate this time.

Standing at an imposing 7-foot-4, Wembanyama led the league in blocked shots for a third consecutive season, consistently altering games with his presence alone. Opponents found scoring near the rim nearly impossible, as the young Frenchman anchored one of the league’s most formidable defensive units.

“Best player in the world,” said Spurs teammate Keldon Johnson, praising Wembanyama’s all-around influence and relentless work ethic.

The achievement carries significant historical weight. Wembanyama is now the youngest player ever to win the award, surpassing all previous winners who were at least 23 years old. He also joins an elite group—alongside David Robinson and Michael Jordan—as one of the only players to win both Rookie of the Year and Defensive Player of the Year.

His win also adds to the Spurs’ legacy, making them the first franchise to have four different players claim the DPOY honor. The list includes Robinson, Alvin Robertson, and Kawhi Leonard.

Other finalists included Chet Holmgren of the Oklahoma City Thunder and Ausar Thompson of the Detroit Pistons, both of whom played key roles in leading their teams to top playoff seeds. However, neither came close to challenging Wembanyama’s overwhelming vote count.

This marks the second time Wembanyama has been a unanimous selection, having also swept Rookie of the Year honors in 2024. Remarkably, no player in at least the past 50 years has achieved multiple unanimous major awards, placing him in rare company—even legends like LeBron James never accomplished the feat.

Wembanyama’s stellar season is far from over in terms of recognition. He is also a finalist for the NBA MVP award alongside Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and Nikola Jokic, signaling his growing dominance on both ends of the court.
