Wembanyama Powers Spurs Past Thunder, Forces Decisive Game 7 in Western Conference Finals

Victor Wembanyama delivered a dominant performance when San Antonio needed it most, recording 28 points and 10 rebounds to lead the Spurs to a convincing 118-91 victory over the Oklahoma City Thunder in Game 6 of the Western Conference Finals on Thursday.

The emphatic win levels the best-of-seven series at 3-3 and sets up a winner-takes-all Game 7 on Saturday in Oklahoma City. The victor will advance to the NBA Finals to face the New York Knicks.

Coming off a disappointing Game 5 defeat, Spurs coach Mitch Johnson had challenged his team to get more from its franchise star. Wembanyama responded immediately, making his presence felt within the opening moments of the contest.

The French superstar drilled two three-pointers and blocked a shot in the first 90 seconds, helping San Antonio seize early control. The Spurs never trailed after taking the lead and maintained the momentum throughout the night.

San Antonio built a 15-point advantage early in the second quarter before Oklahoma City mounted a brief response. The Thunder reduced the deficit to five points late in the half, but the Spurs entered the break with a seven-point cushion.

The game turned decisively in the third quarter. San Antonio tightened its defensive intensity and unleashed a stunning 20-0 scoring run that effectively ended the contest. During that stretch, Oklahoma City endured a prolonged offensive drought, missing 14 consecutive field-goal attempts and going nearly eight minutes without scoring.

The Thunder managed only 13 points in the third quarter, their lowest-scoring quarter of the entire season, as the Spurs stretched their lead beyond reach.

With the outcome all but decided entering the final period, Thunder head coach Mark Daigneault rested key starters Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Chet Holmgren and Isaiah Hartenstein for the fourth quarter.

Gilgeous-Alexander, who has been Oklahoma City’s offensive leader throughout the postseason, was limited to 15 points on 6-of-18 shooting. It marked his lowest scoring performance since Game 3 of last season’s Western Conference Finals.

San Antonio also received valuable contributions from its supporting cast. Dylan Harper scored 18 points off the bench, while Stephon Castle added 17 points and nine assists, committing only one turnover. The Spurs’ reserves played a crucial role, outscoring Oklahoma City’s bench 46-38 after being outplayed for much of the series.

The Spurs set the tone early with their perimeter shooting, knocking down eight three-pointers in the opening quarter alone. Wembanyama accounted for three of those baskets as San Antonio raced ahead. In contrast, the Thunder struggled from long range, making just one of six attempts in the first period.

Oklahoma City also welcomed back Jalen Williams after a three-game absence due to a hamstring strain. However, the forward was limited to 10 minutes off the bench and finished with just one point.

With momentum now swinging back toward San Antonio, the Western Conference Finals will be decided in a high-stakes Game 7 on Saturday.
