Tottenham Move Closer to Marcos Senesi Signing as Squad Rebuild Continues

Tottenham Hotspur are closing in on the signing of Bournemouth defender Marcos Senesi on a free transfer, with discussions progressing toward a final agreement as the club looks to strengthen its squad ahead of the new season.

While personal terms with the 29-year-old centre-back have not yet been fully agreed, the deal is moving toward completion. Tottenham are also advancing in their efforts to bring in Scotland full-back Andy Robertson, who is available after leaving Liverpool at the end of his contract.

Senesi’s expected arrival would represent a significant addition to Spurs’ defensive options. Bournemouth had spent months attempting to convince the Argentina international to remain on the south coast, but those efforts ultimately proved unsuccessful. The club made three separate contract offers, with the final proposal rejected in December. Following that decision, Bournemouth ended attempts to renew his deal while the player explored opportunities elsewhere.

Several major overseas clubs were reported to be interested in Senesi, but the defender now appears set to continue his career in the Premier League unless there is a late change in direction.

The centre-back enjoyed an impressive campaign with Bournemouth, missing only one league match as the club achieved a historic sixth-place finish and secured European qualification for the first time. His consistency and experience were key factors in Bournemouth’s successful season.

Since joining from Dutch side Feyenoord in 2022, Senesi has made 128 appearances for Bournemouth across four years, establishing himself as an important figure in the team’s defence.

For Tottenham, the move forms part of a wider rebuilding process following a difficult league campaign. Spurs finished 17th in the Premier League but showed signs of improvement after Roberto De Zerbi was appointed head coach in March. The club managed to avoid relegation to the Championship and is now focused on reshaping its squad.

Speaking to BBC Sport earlier this week, Tottenham chief executive Vinai Venkatesham outlined the club’s priorities in the transfer market.

“The squad needs work and the squad hasn’t got the right balance,” he said.

“We need experience and leadership and also that kind of physical robustness to play in the most demanding league that exists.

“We need to strengthen the club over multiple transfer windows but this transfer window, in particular, is going to be critical.”

The potential signing of Senesi appears to fit that profile as Tottenham seek greater experience, leadership and stability in their defensive ranks ahead of a crucial season.
