Victor Wembanyama’s highly anticipated sophomore NBA season came to an unexpected halt, leaving San Antonio Spurs fans and the basketball world reeling. The 21-year-old phenom was officially ruled out for the remainder of the 2024–2025 season in February after a troubling diagnosis: a blood clot that forced him into an indefinite recovery.

Wembanyama had just wrapped up a six-game road trip with the Spurs when the news broke. At the time, the French superstar was in the midst of an even better campaign than his Rookie of the Year season, having elevated nearly every statistical category. His absence has since cast a long shadow over the Spurs’ momentum and their hopes for a rapid rebuild.

Now, months into recovery, Wembanyama remains without a clear return timeline. However, a recent report from NBA insider Marc Stein has provided a glimmer of optimism. Writing in The Stein Line, Stein reported that Wembanyama has been spotted participating in fullcourt runs at Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles and “is said to have looked quite stellar.”

Still, no official confirmation has come from the Spurs, and caution remains the word of the day. The blood clot issue has understandably altered the trajectory of Wembanyama’s year — not just in the NBA, but also internationally. Had he been healthy, Wembanyama would likely have featured for France in the upcoming EuroBasket competition, joining fellow NBA stars like Nikola Jokic and Luka Doncic on the European stage.

Wembanyama’s breakout potential was on full display early in the season. After an outstanding rookie campaign — where he averaged 21.4 points, 10.6 rebounds, 3.9 assists, 1.2 steals, and 3.6 blocks across 71 games — he elevated his numbers across the board in year two. His shooting improved to 48% from the field and 35% from three-point range, taking nearly nine attempts per game. His performance earned him an All-Star nod and put him in the mix for major defensive honors.

But when he went down in February, so did much of the Spurs’ upward swing. San Antonio, which finished the season with a 34-48 record and 13th in the Western Conference, had shown signs of growth. Wembanyama was central to that progress.
