Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez has agreed to face Gennady Golovkin later this year in a trilogy fight. Canelo would be defending his super-middleweight titles as the undisputed champion for the first time this year. This is coming just a few weeks after Canelo moved up to the light-heavyweight to face Dmitry Bivol for the WBA light heavyweight title, and it ended with Canelo suffering his second professional career loss, which came via unanimous decision.
Now, Canelo would be returning to familiar territory with a familiar foe. He and Golovkin first met in 2017 in a fight that ended in a draw. One year later, they met, and this time, Canelo emerged victorious. The third fight would take place on September 17. Canelo picked that fight over having a rematch against Bivol.
Canelo has so much to lose on the line in his upcoming fight. First, his undisputed title (WBC, WBA, IBF, and WBO super-middleweight champion) is at stake. He has been the undisputed champion since 2021 when he won the IBF super-middleweight title after defeating Caleb Plant. His fight against Golovkin is very pivotal to his reign as undisputed champion.
There is also the matter of his fighting record. Before his loss to Bivol earlier this month, Canelo only had one loss, which was in 2013, when he lost to Floyd Mayweather by mixed decision. It has been nearly 10 years since they happened, and he now has two losses. Losing to Golovkin could further tarnish his record, which is not something he wants in any way.
But he also has to be aware of his opponent. Golovjin is a champion in his own right. He is the current WBA and IBF middleweight champion. Since his loss to Canelo in 2018, he has won four consecutive fights.
Canelo’s promoter, Eddie Hearn, dubbed the upcoming fixture the “biggest fight in boxing.”
All is currently being set for the fight to take place as planned, although no venue has been confined yet.
