Conor McGregor will return to the UFC on July 11, ending a five-year absence from the octagon when he faces Max Holloway in the main event of UFC 329 during International Fight Week in Las Vegas.
The fight, which was announced during the UFC 117 broadcast, will take place at T-Mobile Arena and marks McGregor’s first UFC appearance since breaking his leg against Dustin Poirier at UFC 264 in 2021.
The matchup is set for welterweight and serves as the sequel to the two’s first meeting over a decade ago.
McGregor first fought Holloway in August 2013, defeating the Hawaiian by unanimous decision in Boston during his early rise through the featherweight division.
McGregor fought much of that bout with a torn ACL, but still managed to stay ahead for most of the fight.
A lot has changed since 2013. Holloway went on to become UFC featherweight champion and built one of the strongest resumes in the division’s history with wins over names such as Jose Aldo, Brian Ortega, and Justin Gaethje. McGregor, meanwhile, became the UFC’s biggest commercial star, winning titles in two divisions before his career stalled through injuries, inactivity, and losses to Poirier.
Now 37, McGregor returns with major questions surrounding him, especially about timing, endurance, and motivation after such a long period away from active competition.
He has remained one of the sport’s biggest attractions outside the cage through business ventures and public appearances, but this fight represents his first real attempt to re-enter the title picture.
For Holloway, the fight presents a different kind of opportunity. The former featherweight champion will make his welterweight debut after spending most of his UFC career at 145 pounds.
He is currently one of the best fighters in MMA, especially when evaluating striking power, but the move to 170 adds uncertainty against a naturally bigger puncher like McGregor.
With two losses from his last three fights, including a defeat at the hands of Charles Oliveira back in March, winning his next outing is quite important to him.
