This Saturday, the heavyweight division will witness a battle of two of its finest, as Tom Aspinall performs his first title defence against Ciryl Gane.
Aspinall is fighting for the first time since seizing the vacant heavyweight title, following Jon Jones’ retirement, while Gane is making his third attempt for the UFC title.
Standing 6 feet 5 inches tall, Aspinall enters the fight as a champion for the first time.
Earlier this year, as the former interim champion, he was frustrated over not having the chance to fight Jones for the heavyweight title, and at some point said he was moving on from it, until the latter’s retirement.
His rise in the heavyweight division has been defined by early stoppages and relentless ground control.
He holds the UFC record for the shortest average fight time among heavyweights, winning all his UFC bouts by submission or knockout in the opening rounds.
35-year-old Gane has held the interim UFC Heavyweight Championship and remains a top contender known for his methodical and calculated approach.
He has twice challenged unsuccessfully for the undisputed title, losing closely contested fights to Francis Ngannou in 2022 and Jon Jones in 2023.
Gane’s evolution since those title shots includes refined defensive strategy and careful distance management, aiming to disrupt opponents before they can impose control.
Both fighters bring different experiences to UFC 321. Aspinall’s focus on fast takedowns and ground finishes contrasts with Gane’s fluid striking and cautious pacing.
Aspinall will likely look to close the distance quickly to neutralise Gane’s reach and movement, using his grappling to control the contest. Gane, in turn, will rely on footwork and timing to keep Aspinall off balance and find openings for strikes.
The stakes for this fight are high, as the winner moves closer to a shot at the undisputed heavyweight championship.
For Aspinall, it is an opportunity to break into the upper echelon by defeating a former interim titleholder. For Gane, it represents another step in reclaiming his place among the very best in the division after recent setbacks.
