Oleksandr Usyk has come out to explain his decision to face Rico Verhoeven, making it clear the fight is about choice as much as competition. 

With the bout set for May 23 in Egypt and the WBC heavyweight title on the line, Usyk is stepping outside the usual path of facing big names in the division to take on a different kind of opponent.

At this stage of his career, it’s clear that the Ukrainian Usyk is no longer interested in following a fixed order of contenders. 

He has pointed to years of mandatory fights and negotiations that left little room for personal preference. 

Now, he is leaning toward matchups that appeal to him directly, both in terms of challenge and reward.

In his words: “For me it’s a challenge. Rico is a great guy, a dangerous guy. One time I want to do what I want, not what I need. A lot of time I do what other people need. You have to box this person, or this or this. I say okay. Now I do what I want.”

The option of facing a traditional boxing opponent was there. Names like Fabio Wardley have been mentioned, but Usyk has indicated that those routes do not carry the same pull right now. 

Instead, this fight offers a bigger stage and a different kind of test, one that fits where he is in his career.

Verhoeven, while new to boxing at this level, is not being treated as a routine opponent. Usyk has described him as a physically strong heavyweight who has developed sharp skills over the years at the top of kickboxing. 

That background introduces a different rhythm to the fight, requiring adjustments in preparation and approach.

The appeal also extends beyond the technical side. Usyk is looking at the broader picture, including the scale of the event and what it adds to his career. 

A crossover fight like this brings attention, creates a different type of build-up, and allows him to explore something outside the standard title defence, which marked his heavyweight career between 2021 and 2025.
