Deontay Wilder has welcomed the possibility of fighting Oleksandr Usyk, with discussions continuing over what could become the unbeaten Ukrainian’s final professional bout before retirement.

Usyk’s team is exploring options for a farewell fight in the United States, and team director Sergey Lapin identified Wilder as the preferred opponent. Lapin said Wilder is the fighter Usyk wants for his “last dance,” with talks already underway over a potential agreement.

Wilder’s camp has responded positively to the proposal. Manager Shelly Finkel said the former WBC heavyweight champion would be happy to face Usyk if a deal can be reached, describing it as an honour to share the ring with one of boxing’s leading champions.

The matchup is one that would not fly under the rader as it would pair two of the most recognisable heavyweights of their generation. Usyk has already defeated the likes of Tyson Fury, Anthony Joshua and Daniel Dubois, while Wilder built his reputation through a long reign as WBC heavyweight champion and a string of knockout victories.

Since Usyk entered the heavyweight scene, he has gone toe-to-toe with most of the big name that are still active, with Wilder being a noticeable omission from his resume. This will be cleared with his last fight. 

Although Wilder has lost several high-profile fights in recent years, he remains one of the division’s biggest punchers. 

His power gives him a chance against any opponent, making a meeting with Usyk a far more competitive farewell than many expected the Ukrainian to pursue.

No agreement has been signed, and key details such as the date and venue remain unresolved. Reports indicate Zuffa Boxing is involved in the discussions as plans continue for a possible event in the United States.

If the fight goes ahead, it would likely be the final chapter of Usyk’s professional career, while offering Wilder another opportunity to compete for one of the biggest victories of his career.
