Bayern Munich’s Canadian wing-back Alphonso Davies has signed a contract extension that will keep him at the club until June 2030, the club announced on Tuesday. The decision ends months of speculation regarding his future, with Real Madrid having been reportedly interested in signing the 23-year-old.
Davies, who joined Bayern in 2018 from MLS side Vancouver Whitecaps for a then-record fee, has become one of the club’s key players. His extension reinforces Bayern’s long-term strategy of building around young talent.
“Phonzy (Davies) has been playing for Bayern since he was 18 and quickly embraced the club,” Bayern’s board member for sport Max Eberl stated. “We see him as one of the figures in the new generation of our team who are increasingly taking on responsibility. He’s grown up here and will continue to grow with the team.”
Contract negotiations had been prolonged, with Bayern making what Eberl described as a final offer in March 2024. However, Real Madrid never acted decisively on their supposed interest, leading Davies to commit his future to Bayern.
“I came to FC Bayern when I was 18 and just wanted to learn as much as possible every day to become one of the best in my position,” Davies said after signing the deal. “Now I’m looking forward to another five years together. I’ve already achieved a lot here, but there’s more to come.”
Davies’ rise to football stardom is an inspiring story. Born in the Buduburam refugee camp in Ghana to Liberian parents who fled the civil war, his family moved to Canada when he was five, settling in Edmonton. It was there that Davies discovered his passion for football, playing in school and a free after-school league for inner-city children.
His talent was quickly recognized, leading him to the Whitecaps’ residency program at 14. He became the youngest player to compete in the United Soccer League and the first player born in the 2000s to play in Major League Soccer.
Since joining Bayern, Davies has played 220 competitive matches, scoring 12 goals and assisting 34. His honors include five Bundesliga titles, two German Cup titles, and a Champions League trophy. He has also earned 56 caps for Canada, playing a crucial role in the national team’s resurgence.
Bayern’s Contract Decisions Continue
Davies’ extension follows Bayern’s decision to hand veteran goalkeeper Manuel Neuer a one-year contract extension. However, the club still faces crucial negotiations with other key players. Midfielder Joshua Kimmich and forwards Leroy Sané and Thomas Müller are all out of contract at the end of the season. Additionally, young star Jamal Musiala’s future remains uncertain, as his current deal expires in 2026.
By securing Davies’ long-term commitment, Bayern has taken a significant step in shaping its squad for the future. Now, attention turns to the next round of contract discussions as the club looks to maintain its competitive edge.
