Brazil coach Carlo Ancelotti has handed Neymar a potential lifeline for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, insisting the Santos star remains part of his long-term plans, but only if he can prove his full fitness.
The 33-year-old forward has not featured for Brazil since October 2023, when the Selecao fell 2–0 to Uruguay, but Ancelotti confirmed that he could still make a dramatic return to the national team setup ahead of next year’s tournament.
Neymar, who has 128 international caps and 79 goals, returned to boyhood club Santos earlier this year after leaving Paris Saint-Germain in 2023.
However, injuries have severely disrupted his career in recent seasons. A cruciate ligament tear suffered at Al Hilal in 2023/24 was followed by recurring hamstring problems, limiting his time on the pitch.
Ancelotti acknowledged Neymar’s world-class quality but stressed that consistent playing time and full physical recovery would be essential for a call-up.
“Neymar can play at the highest level in this team without any problem. When he is fit, he has the talent to play for Brazil or any team in the world. But to do that, he must be in top condition. Beautiful football is not just about skill — it’s about teamwork, movement, and discipline. That’s what I expect from all my players.” Ancelotti told reporters.
The Italian coach, who took charge of Brazil in 2024, has rejuvenated the squad with a blend of experience and youth.
His most recent selection included attacking stars such as Richarlison, Raphinha, Gabriel Martinelli, Joao Pedro, Luiz Henrique, and teenage sensation Estevão.
Brazil recently bounced back from a disappointing World Cup qualifying loss to Bolivia with a 5–0 win over South Korea, securing qualification despite finishing in their lowest-ever South American qualifying position.
Brazil legend Ronaldo Nazário has also publicly backed Neymar to play a key role at the 2026 World Cup if he regains fitness.
