Gauff beats Pegula to win Wuha

Coco Gauff claimed the 2025 Wuhan Open singles title on Sunday by defeating fellow American Jessica Pegula 6-4, 7-5 in a tense final match.

This victory marks Gauff’s 11th career singles trophy and her third WTA 1000 title, reinforcing her status as one of the top players on the women’s tour.

The match began with Gauff taking an early lead in the first set. She raced to a 4-1 advantage, showing her control with consistent groundstrokes and sharp court coverage.

Pegula battled back to even the score at 4-4, using her aggressive baseline play to extend rallies and force errors. Still, Gauff seized critical moments down the stretch, breaking Pegula’s serve at 5-4 to clinch the first set 6-4.

In the second set, Pegula surged ahead to a 3-0 lead, applying pressure with deep returns and precise shot placement. Gauff, however, slowly regained composure and narrowed the gap to 5-3 after winning a series of intense exchanges.

As Pegula served for the set at 5-4, Gauff elevated her game. She fought off set points and began a run of four straight games, using a mix of topspin, slice, and timely net approaches to unsettle Pegula.

At 5-5, the odds had clearly shifted in Gauff’s favour. Pegula’s attempt to regain control faltered, and a crucial forehand volley narrowly missed its mark, handing Gauff the chance to serve for the match. On match point, Gauff unleashed a precise forehand winner to end the contest.

This victory caps a strong year for Gauff, who captured her first title of the season at Roland Garros in June and maintained excellent form on hard courts throughout the Asian swing. At just 21 years old, she now holds a 9-0 record in hard-court finals, an impressive streak by WTA standards.

Gauff praised her team after the match, sharing that the recent stretch of tournaments in Asia challenged her physically and mentally, but also motivated her to push through tough moments.

Her performance in Wuhan was proof of how much sharper and resilient she’s grown, adapting quickly to Pegula’s style and adjusting shots to open court space when needed.
