Arsenal have begun early internal discussions about expanding the capacity of the Emirates Stadium, with the possibility of temporarily playing home matches at Wembley Stadium while work takes place.
The plans, still in their preliminary stages, aim to explore ways to modernize and enlarge the club’s 20-year-old home.
Next year marks two decades since Arsenal moved from Highbury to the Emirates, and the club is considering how best to keep pace with rival Premier League teams that now boast larger stadiums.
The discussions have reportedly included options to alter the seating configuration, which could add several thousand extra seats.
The Emirates currently holds 60,704 fans, making it the fifth-largest football ground in England. Manchester United’s Old Trafford remains the biggest with a capacity of 74,879, followed by Tottenham Hotspur Stadium (62,850), West Ham’s London Stadium (62,500), and Liverpool’s Anfield (61,276).
Playing at Wembley has emerged as a potential solution if construction or redevelopment affects Arsenal’s ability to host fixtures at the Emirates.
The idea mirrors arrangements made by Tottenham Hotspur during their stadium rebuild between 2017 and 2019, when they temporarily played home games at Wembley.
While no concrete timeline or proposal has been finalized, club executives are believed to be exploring both the financial and logistical feasibility of such a project.
Any expansion would need to balance fan experience, matchday revenue, and long-term infrastructure goals.
Supporters are expected to be kept informed as discussions progress, with any decision likely to undergo consultation with local authorities and fan representatives.
For now, Arsenal’s potential expansion reflects the club’s ambition to stay competitive off the pitch as well as on it.
The Gunners are currently top of the Premier League table after weekend’s 2-0 win over West Ham United and Liverpool’s 2-1 loss to Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Saturday.
They will return to action on October 18 for a London derby with Fulham after the international break.
