Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has expressed his disappointment at the club’s failure to make any signings during the winter transfer window.
Despite being expected to bring in an attacker after Gabriel Jesus suffered a season-ending injury, the Gunners were unable to secure any new additions. Arteta praised the club’s discipline in not making any panic buys but admitted that he had hoped to bring in some fresh talent.
The Arsenal manager stated that the club had a clear intention to improve their squad during the transfer window but were unable to find the right players. He emphasized the importance of being disciplined in the transfer market and only bringing in players who fit the club’s profile. Arteta also hinted that the club may have to be flexible with their front line due to injuries, and may have to try something different.
Football finance expert Kieran Maguire explained that Arsenal’s lack of business was a decision made in a tough market for buyers. With the extension of the Champions League and Europa League into January, clubs were reluctant to sell, making it difficult for Arsenal to find the right players. Maguire suggested that Arsenal may have felt that there were no players available who could improve their starting XI or regular 16.
Despite the lack of transfer activity, Arsenal are still in a strong position in the Premier League, sitting second behind leaders Liverpool. The Gunners secured an impressive 5-1 win over Manchester City on Sunday and will be looking to continue their good form in their upcoming EFL Cup semi-final second leg against Newcastle.
Three players did leave Arsenal during the transfer window, with defenders Ayden Heaven and Josh Robinson joining Manchester United and Wigan Athletic, respectively. Brazilian attacker Marquinhos also joined Cruzeiro on loan until the end of the season.
Arteta will now have to focus on getting the best out of his current squad and finding ways to adapt to the injuries that have affected his team. With a busy schedule ahead, the Arsenal manager will be hoping that his players can stay fit and maintain their good form.
