Arsenal Sink Manchester United 2-0 to Close Gap on Premier League Leaders

Arsenal secured a commanding 2-0 victory over Manchester United at the Emirates Stadium on Wednesday, cutting the gap to Premier League leaders Liverpool to seven points. 

Goals from Jurrien Timber and William Saliba, both stemming from set pieces, highlighted Arsenal’s dominance in aerial duels and ensured the Gunners capitalized on Liverpool’s earlier draw at Newcastle.

From the opening whistle, Arsenal demonstrated their prowess in attacking set pieces. Thomas Partey narrowly missed directing a Declan Rice corner into the net during the first half. Manchester United goalkeeper Andre Onana was kept busy, twice punching away dangerous corners, with one clearance falling to Gabriel Martinelli, who failed to keep his shot on target.

Despite Arsenal’s early pressure, United remained patient, slowing the pace and focusing on possession. Their best chance of the first half came from Diogo Dalot, who dragged a shot wide from a tight angle just before the break.

The deadlock was broken in the 54th minute when Rice delivered another pinpoint corner. Jurrien Timber outmaneuvered his marker to head in from a tight angle, sending the Emirates crowd into raptures.

United responded quickly, threatening to equalize from a set piece of their own. Matthijs de Ligt’s powerful header seemed destined for the net, but Arsenal goalkeeper David Raya produced a stunning fingertip save to deny the Dutch defender.

Arsenal sealed the victory in the 73rd minute with yet another set piece masterclass. A Bukayo Saka corner found Partey, whose header deflected off Saliba and into the net. The goal marked Arsenal’s 22nd league goal from a corner since the start of last season, underlining their set-piece effectiveness.

Declan Rice nearly added a third moments later, but substitute Mikel Merino nodded the resulting corner just wide. Arsenal’s dominance in set plays continued to elicit roars of anticipation from the home crowd.

The win moves Arsenal to third place in the Premier League standings, level on 28 points with Chelsea but behind on goal difference. For Manchester United, the defeat marks the first league loss under new manager Rúben Amorim, leaving them languishing in 11th place with 19 points.

Amorim, who had been unbeaten in league games since his Sporting Lisbon side lost in December 2023, will now face pressure to turn around United’s inconsistent form. Meanwhile, Arsenal eyes a strong run as they attempt to chase down Liverpool in the title race.
