Arsenal sweat over Mikel Merino’s injury

Mikel Merino has undergone surgery on a fractured foot sustained during Arsenal’s 3-2 defeat to Manchester United, leaving the club anxiously monitoring his recovery during a crucial phase of the Premier League title race.

The Spain international is now facing a race against time to return before the end of the season, with Arsenal currently six points clear at the top of the table.

The 29-year-old will be unable to place serious weight on the injured foot for the next eight weeks, although he is expected to continue working in the gym.

While there is optimism inside the club that Merino could feature again this season, his timeline remains tight as the Gunners chase their first league title since 2004.

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta admitted the injury represents a significant setback, praising Merino’s importance and adaptability. “We hope so, but we don’t know,” Arteta said when asked about a possible return this term.

“He needs to go through a procedure, which is never positive. He’s a big player for us and an athlete with the versatility to compete in various positions.”

Arteta also revealed that the nature of the injury is unusual, adding further uncertainty to the recovery process.

“It’s a very rare injury, so we have to wait and see how it reacts after the surgery,” he explained. “Mikel will do absolutely everything he can to come back as quickly as possible, but he has to respect the healing process.”

Merino, who has scored four goals and provided three assists this season, has impressed since arriving as a midfielder and evolving into a genuine attacking option.

Arteta has repeatedly highlighted the Spaniard’s football intelligence and curiosity, qualities that have allowed him to exceed expectations and fill multiple roles across the pitch.

Arsenal’s injury concerns extend beyond Merino, with Bukayo Saka and Martin Ødegaard also sidelined.

The Gunners face a tricky away trip to Brentford next before turning their attention to an FA Cup fourth-round tie against Wigan Athletic, as Arteta’s side look to navigate a demanding run-in without several key players.
