Barcelona elections to impact Marcus Rashford’s stay

Marcus Rashford’s long-term future at Barcelona is taking shape, but the outcome may hinge on events off the pitch as much as his performances on it.

The England international has impressed during his loan spell from Manchester United, to the extent that Barcelona are widely expected to activate a €30 million purchase option, provided current president Joan Laporta retains power in upcoming club elections.

Rashford joined the Catalan giants in the summer of 2025 after being deemed surplus to requirements at Old Trafford under Ruben Amorim.

Having spent the latter half of the previous campaign on loan at Aston Villa, the 28-year-old embraced the opportunity to move to Camp Nou.

While no formal talks with Manchester United have yet taken place, Barcelona hold a clear option to make the deal permanent at a relatively modest fee.

On the pitch, Rashford has quickly won over supporters. A standing ovation during a 3-0 win over Real Mallorca underlined his growing popularity, while his blend of pace, work rate, and end product has made him a valuable attacking weapon.

His rising stock, however, comes at a time when Barcelona are preparing for a pivotal presidential election that could reshape transfer policy.

Laporta, the favourite to retain control in mid-March, has built his campaign around financial pragmatism and stability, following years of economic turmoil at the club.

Rashford’s availability at a reduced price fits neatly into that vision, but rival candidates, notably Victor Font, have argued for a broader, more ambitious sporting project that could change priorities in the transfer market.

Barcelona’s strong on-field results may strengthen Laporta’s hand. The Blaugrana sit top of La Liga, have reached the Champions League last 16 and Copa del Rey semi-finals, and have already beaten Real Madrid in the Spanish Super Cup.

Those successes have created a positive backdrop for continuity, which would likely benefit Rashford’s chances of securing a permanent stay.

Manchester United, meanwhile, have not entirely given up hope of a reunion. With Ruben Amorim dismissed in January, interim boss Michael Carrick is reportedly keen on bringing Rashford back should he be appointed permanently.
