Aston Villa took a significant step toward the semi-finals of the UEFA Europa League with an impressive 3-1 victory over Bologna in the first leg of their quarter-final tie at the Stadio Renato Dall’Ara. 

Aston Villa delivered a clinical away performance, with Ollie Watkins scoring twice to put Unai Emery’s side firmly in control ahead of the return leg.

Villa made a strong start and quickly imposed themselves on the game, taking the lead through Ezri Konsa. 

The defender capitalised on a set-piece opportunity to give the visitors an early advantage, unsettling a Bologna side that struggled to cope with Villa’s physicality and organisation in the opening stages.

The Premier League side doubled their lead before the break, with Watkins finishing confidently after being left unmarked in the box. 

Bologna’s defensive lapses were evident, as Villa continued to exploit spaces and threaten on the counter-attack, leaving the home side with a mountain to climb in the second half.

Bologna responded with greater urgency after the interval and were rewarded late on when Jonathan Rowe pulled a goal back. 

The winger produced a fine individual effort, driving forward before curling a precise shot into the far corner to give the Italian side a lifeline and ignite hopes of a comeback.

However, just as Bologna began to build momentum, Villa struck again in stoppage time to restore their two-goal cushion. 

Watkins reacted quickest from another set-piece situation, stabbing home from close range to secure his second goal of the night and cap off a ruthless attacking display from the visitors.

The result leaves Villa in a commanding position heading into the second leg, with Emery’s side demonstrating both resilience and efficiency away from home. 

While Bologna showed flashes of quality, particularly through Rowe, they will need a near-perfect performance in the return fixture if they are to overturn the deficit and keep their European ambitions alive.
