Aston Villa stormed into the Europa League final with a commanding 4-0 victory over Nottingham Forest at Villa Park on Thursday night, overturning their first-leg deficit to seal a 4-1 aggregate triumph.
After trailing 1-0 from the opening leg, Unai Emery’s side produced a ruthless display in front of their home supporters to keep alive hopes of European silverware.
Villa dominated much of the contest and found the breakthrough in the 36th minute when Ollie Watkins fired the hosts ahead on the night.
The striker’s goal levelled the tie on aggregate and lifted the atmosphere inside Villa Park as Emery’s men began to take complete control against a subdued Forest side.
The Premier League club extended their advantage shortly after the break through Emiliano Buendía, who calmly converted from the penalty spot in the 58th minute.
Forest struggled to respond and rarely threatened Emiliano Martínez in the Villa goal, with the visitors lacking the intensity that had carried them through earlier rounds of the competition.
Captain John McGinn then put the tie beyond doubt with two late strikes in the 77th and 80th minutes.
His first came after excellent work from Watkins, before Morgan Rogers provided the assist for McGinn’s second as Villa ran riot in the closing stages.
The midfielder celebrated wildly with the home crowd as Forest’s players were left stunned by the collapse.
The result marked another memorable European night for Emery, whose reputation in continental competition continues to grow.
The Villa manager received a standing ovation from supporters at full-time after guiding the club to its first major European final in decades.
Former Villa striker Dion Dublin praised the tactical display on BBC Radio 5 Live, describing Emery as “the master of this competition.”
Villa will now face SC Freiburg in the Europa League final after the German side defeated SC Braga 3-1 to win their semi-final 4-3 on aggregate.
For Forest, the defeat ended a remarkable European journey, while Villa moved one step closer to lifting another continental trophy under Emery’s guidance.
