Atletico Madrid held their nerve to secure a place in the Champions League semi-finals, advancing 3-2 on aggregate despite a dramatic 2-1 defeat to FC Barcelona in a pulsating second leg in Madrid.
Trailing 2-0 from the first leg, Barcelona made a blistering start. Teenage winger Lamine Yamal ignited hopes of a comeback just five minutes in, capitalizing on a loose touch from former Barca defender Clement Lenglet to slip the ball past goalkeeper Juan Musso. The early goal set the tone for an intense encounter.
Barcelona’s pressure paid off again in the 24th minute when Ferran Torres finished clinically from a Dani Olmo assist, curling a powerful left-footed strike into the top corner to level the tie on aggregate.
However, Atletico responded swiftly. Just seven minutes later, Marcos Llorente surged down the right and delivered a decisive pass into the box, where Ademola Lookman converted to restore Atletico’s aggregate advantage. The goal proved pivotal in a match filled with momentum swings.
Barcelona had earlier missed a golden opportunity to take full control when Fermin Lopez was denied by Musso’s impressive save from close range. The visitors continued to threaten, and Torres thought he had netted again early in the second half, only for his effort to be ruled out for offside following a VAR review.
The Catalan side’s hopes suffered another blow when Eric Garcia was sent off after fouling Alexander Sorloth, leaving Barcelona to chase the game with 10 men.
Despite relentless pressure, including late chances for Robert Lewandowski and Ronald Araujo, Barcelona could not find the decisive goal that would have completed a remarkable comeback.
Atletico manager Diego Simeone praised his team’s resilience after the match. “It’s been 14 years now. Seeing the team still competing excites me,” he said. “We’re back among the top four in Europe.”
Atletico will now face either Arsenal or Sporting CP in the semi-finals, as they continue their pursuit of a first Champions League final appearance since 2016.
