Atletico Madrid secured a 2-0 win over Manchester United in the Champions League on Tuesday night, using their numerical advantage to punish Michael Carrick’s side at the Metropolitano Stadium.
Despite improving on their weekend performance, United suffered another setback, recording just their second win in nine games this season.
Manchester United struggled to make their chances count before being reduced to 10 men, giving Atletico greater control of the contest.
The hosts took advantage of the situation, increasing the pressure on Carrick as his side continued to search for consistency.
Atletico took an immediate lead from the start through Pablo Barrios in the first minute of the game before substitute Ademola Lookman sealed the victory in the 80th minute.
United goalkeeper Senne Lammens initially denied the hosts with a strong save, but the rebound fell kindly to Lookman, who swept it into the net to double Atletico’s lead.
The goal effectively ended United’s hopes of salvaging a result, with Atletico exploiting the extra space created by their numerical advantage.
Lookman’s finish capped a decisive contribution from the substitute, while the home side’s attacking pace proved difficult for United to contain in the closing stages.
Carrick responded to Atletico’s second goal by bringing on Matheus Cunha and Harry Maguire, with Bruno Fernandes and Ayden Heaven off.
Cunha came close to pulling one back late on, but Atletico goalkeeper Jan Oblak comfortably dealt with his effort as the hosts maintained their clean sheet.
The defeat added to the growing pressure on Carrick, with frustration evident among the traveling United supporters as many left the stadium before the final whistle.
Although United showed signs of improvement, their inability to take their chances and their struggles after going down to 10 men proved costly, leaving them with another disappointing result in a difficult run of form.
