Atletico Madrid moved within touching distance of the Champions League semi-finals after producing a disciplined and clinical display to beat Barcelona at the Nou Camp in the first leg of their quarter-final.
The visitors had not won away to Barcelona since 2006, but they ended that long wait in style with a 2-0 victory built on smart finishing and a key turning point just before half-time. Julian Alvarez opened the scoring with a superb free-kick, and Alexander Sorloth added a late second to leave Barcelona facing a major challenge ahead of next Tuesday’s return leg in Madrid.
For long spells, Barcelona looked the stronger side. Hansi Flick’s team controlled much of the match, created chances and finished with 24 attempts on goal. Marcus Rashford was a constant threat, forcing saves and later striking the crossbar with a free-kick. He also had an effort disallowed after Lamine Yamal was judged offside in the build-up.
Yet despite their dominance, Barcelona were undone by a lack of cutting edge and one costly defensive moment.
The defining incident came just before the break when Pau Cubarsi fouled Giuliano Simeone as the Atletico forward raced through on goal. Referee Istvan Kovacs initially showed a yellow card, but after being sent to the pitchside monitor by the video assistant referee, he upgraded the decision to a red. That changed the mood of the night instantly.
From the resulting free-kick, Alvarez stepped up and delivered a moment of real quality, curling the ball beyond the goalkeeper and into the net to hand Atletico the lead.
Even with 10 men, Barcelona refused to retreat after the interval. They pushed forward, controlled possession and searched for an equaliser, but Atletico stayed organised and absorbed the pressure. While the home side kept coming, the visitors remained composed and waited for the chance to strike again.
That moment arrived when Matteo Ruggeri sent a low cross into the area and Sorloth swept home to give Atletico a second goal and a commanding advantage in the tie.
The result was a harsh one for Barcelona, who had entered the game in strong form after winning eight and drawing one of their previous nine matches in all competitions, including a 2-1 league victory at Atletico Madrid in their last outing.
Now, however, the pressure has shifted heavily onto Barcelona. Atletico have already beaten them in both of their previous Champions League knockout meetings, and this latest result puts Diego Simeone’s side in a powerful position to do it again.
