Real Madrid and Barcelona are set for another clash this season when both teams face off in the final of the Spanish Super Cup slated for Riyadh on Sunday after Barcelona defeated Osasuna 2-0 in the second semi-final of the Spanish Super Cup to move to the final.
Thursday’s victory means that Barcelona are on track to defend the title they won last season and also extend their record with this Spanish Super Cup to the 15th title. The 2-0 victory on Thursday also meant that Barcelona have gone on a four-game winning streak.
Both Barcelona, the competitor’s most successful team, and Osasuna, who were looking for their first trophy in the club’s history, started well, with both teams wasting chances to go ahead.
Ferran Torres and Robert Lewandowski were the biggest culprits, but Sergio Herrera was also on hand to make some saves to deny Barcelona. Ante Budimir had the biggest opportunity to put Osasuna in front, but it was denied by Iñaki Peña as both teams went into the break level.
Xavi was forced into a change when Raphinha got injured, and Lamine Yamal was introduced instead. Moments later, Barcelona survived a v a r check to take the lead when Robert Lewandowski scored his 11th goal of the season in all competitions when he converted Ilkay Gündoğan’s pass.
João Félix could have made it 2-0, but Osasuna’s goalkeeper, Herrera, made a fine save to keep out strike. The Portuguese provided the assist as second-half substitute Lamine Yamal became the youngest goalscorer in the Super Cup after his left-footed strike, which squirmed past Herrera in stoppage time.
Osasuna will play against Atletico Madrid in the third-place match on Saturday, while Barcelona and Real Madrid will play in the Super Cup final on Sunday.
