Barcelona will head into their upcoming Champions League last-16 clash against Newcastle United with a weakened defense after losing two key players to hamstring injuries.
Defenders Jules Kounde and Alejandro Balde were both ruled out after suffering injuries during the club’s recent Copa del Rey semifinal against Atletico Madrid.
The pair were forced off the field during Tuesday’s match, which Barcelona won 3-0 on the night but still exited the competition after losing 4-3 on aggregate. The injuries were confirmed by the club on Wednesday, raising concerns about the squad’s defensive depth ahead of a crucial period in both domestic and European competitions.
Barcelona released a brief statement regarding Balde’s condition, saying, “The time of the recovery process (for Balde) will be four weeks.” The club did not give a clear timeline for Kounde’s return. However, Spanish media reports suggest that the France international could face a similar recovery period, meaning both defenders are likely to miss the upcoming Champions League ties.
The absence of Kounde and Balde is a significant setback for Barcelona as they prepare to face Newcastle in the knockout stage of Europe’s top club competition. Both players have been important defensive options this season, and their injuries come at a time when the club is already dealing with other fitness concerns.
In addition to the Champions League fixtures, the two defenders are also expected to miss several key La Liga matches. Barcelona will have to navigate league games against Athletic Bilbao, Sevilla and Rayo Vallecano without them, placing additional pressure on the remaining defenders in the squad.
Barcelona’s injury worries do not stop there. Midfielder Frenkie de Jong is also currently sidelined with a hamstring problem, further limiting the team’s options as they approach a demanding run of matches.
Kounde’s injury could also affect international plans. The 27-year-old defender now faces a race against time to be fit for France’s upcoming friendly matches against Brazil and Colombia in the United States later this month. Those games form part of France’s preparation for the World Cup this summer.
Balde, meanwhile, is also an international player for Spain. However, he has been behind Marc Cucurella and Alex Grimaldo in coach Luis de la Fuente’s current selection order.
With multiple injuries affecting key players, Barcelona will need to quickly reorganize their lineup as they prepare for decisive matches both in Europe and in Spain.
