Wembanyama’s Spurs Surge Continues After Dominant Win in Philadelphia

San Antonio Spurs star Victor Wembanyama recently shared a glimpse of a personal adventure far from the basketball court. The French phenom posted a slideshow on Instagram from his first trip to Alaska, where he witnessed the northern lights.

“The show I had was, I think a historic, maybe a once-in-a-lifetime event even for northern lights chasers,” Wembanyama said. “It was the most beautiful thing I’ve seen in my life. Ranks No. 1.”

The Spurs feel similarly fortunate to have the towering 7-foot-4 talent leading their resurgence this season.

San Antonio strengthened its place among the NBA’s top teams Tuesday night with a commanding 131–91 victory over the Philadelphia 76ers, closing out a highly successful road trip. The win capped an impressive 8–1 stretch away from home, a trip that occurs annually while the San Antonio Stock Show and Rodeo occupies the team’s arena.

Rookie Dylan Harper played a key role in the win, scoring 22 points while helping the Spurs hit 18 three-pointers. The blowout marked San Antonio’s largest victory margin since February 2018. At one point, the Spurs led by as many as 49 points.

The defeat also deepened Philadelphia’s struggles. The 76ers became the first team in NBA history to lose three home games by more than 40 points in a single season.

Spurs coach Mitch Johnson credited his team’s discipline during their recent surge.

“When we’ve committed to just not getting bored with our success at times and staying with what’s working, we’ve had some really good stretches,” Johnson said.

San Antonio entered the game looking to bounce back after its 11-game winning streak ended Sunday against the New York Knicks. The Spurs responded emphatically, ensuring there was no hint of another losing streak.

“What happened in New York, I think we wanted to prove to everyone that we’re still here,” Harper said.

The Spurs were particularly dominant throughout February, going undefeated with an 11–0 record. In the process, they became the first team in NBA history to go unbeaten in a month while scoring at least 110 points in each of at least 10 games.

Their strong performances also swept the league’s monthly awards. Harper was named Western Conference Rookie of the Month, Johnson earned Coach of the Month honors, and Wembanyama was recognized as Player of the Month. The young star averaged 22.5 points, 11.3 rebounds and 3.5 blocks during that span.

San Antonio’s surge has lifted them to a 44–17 record and second place in the Western Conference, trailing only the defending champion Oklahoma City Thunder.

After weeks on the road, the Spurs will finally return home for a six-game homestand beginning Thursday against Detroit.

“Sleeping in my own bed,” Wembanyama said. “Eating my chef’s food. Getting back into the normal routine, the normal life.”

For now, though, the Spurs are the ones lighting up the NBA.
