Barcelona hit with big injury update ahead of Copa del Rey tie

FC Barcelona have been dealt a crushing blow ahead of their decisive Copa del Rey semi-final second leg against Atletico Madrid, with confirmation that star striker Robert Lewandowski will miss Tuesday’s clash.

The Catalan side are already staring at a daunting 4-0 deficit from the first leg and must now attempt a historic comeback without their leading goalscorer.

Lewandowski sustained the injury during Saturday’s league encounter with Villarreal. The veteran forward received a heavy blow in the match and underwent medical tests the following morning.

Results confirmed a bone fracture to the internal area of his left eye socket, ruling him out of the crucial midweek fixture and potentially further matches depending on his recovery.

Barcelona issued an official statement detailing the diagnosis and confirming the Poland international’s absence for the visit of Diego Simeone’s side.

The timing could hardly be worse for head coach Hansi Flick, who had been counting on Lewandowski’s experience and clinical edge to spearhead the comeback bid at the Spotify Camp Nou.

Trailing heavily from the first leg at the Metropolitano, Barcelona require a near-perfect attacking display to overturn the aggregate score.

Lewandowski’s physical presence and proven finishing ability were seen as central to any hopes of recovery.

Without him, Flick may be forced to reshuffle his forward line or place greater faith in the club’s younger attacking options.

Club president Joan Laporta has publicly maintained belief in a turnaround despite the setback.

Laporta suggested recent frustrations, including a controversial disallowed goal in the first leg, could serve as motivation for the squad as they attempt to produce a memorable European-style comeback on home soil.

Attention will now turn to Barcelona’s midfield leaders, particularly Pedri, to provide creativity and inspiration against an Atletico defence expected to protect its commanding advantage.

With Lewandowski sidelined and the odds stacked against them, Barcelona face one of the defining nights of their season as they seek to keep their Copa del Rey hopes alive.
