Arsenal secured vital London derby win in title race

Arsenal restored their five-point lead at the top of the Premier League with a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Chelsea at the Emirates Stadium.

Three set-piece goals proved decisive in a tense London derby, as the leaders responded to mounting pressure in the title race to secure another crucial three points.

The hosts took the lead in the 21st minute when William Saliba powered home from close range after being teed up by Gabriel Magalhães.

Arsenal’s dominance from corners was evident throughout, and their early breakthrough reflected a strong start in front of a crowd of 60,296.

Chelsea levelled deep into first-half stoppage time in fortunate circumstances.

Hincapié was credited with an own goal after the ball deflected in from a corner to make it 1-1 at the break, giving the visitors renewed belief after a largely quiet opening period.

The decisive moment arrived in the 66th minute when Jurrien Timber headed in from another corner, this time assisted by Declan Rice.

“We deserved to win this game. In the first half, we don’t give much away. We went in at 1-1, but in the second half, we finished it off, which was top.

Today we came out well, and overall we played a good game. We took the three points and then an important game on Wednesday [against Brighton] again.” Timber said

Arsenal’s effectiveness from dead-ball situations once again punished Chelsea, who struggled to cope with the physical presence in the penalty area.

Chelsea’s task became even harder just four minutes later when Pedro Neto was sent off for a second yellow card.

Despite pushing forward in the closing stages, the visitors were denied a dramatic equaliser when a late effort was ruled out for offside, prompting relief among the home supporters.

The victory keeps Arsenal five points clear at the summit, although they have played a game more than reigning champions Manchester City.

Chelsea remain sixth, three points behind fifth-placed Liverpool, as their inconsistency continues to hinder their push for Champions League qualification.
