Barcelona lose again, drops to ninth, Real Madrid held by Osasuna

Barcelona’s poor run of form continued on Wednesday evening as they succumbed to their second loss after weekend’s 2-1 reverse in the El Clasico.

The Catalonia side travelled to in-form Rayo Vallecano, led by former Atletico Madrid forward Radamel Falcao and it was the Colombian who helped the hosts to their fifth win in seven games.

Falcao’s goal came on the half-hour mark and Barcelona’s chance at an equalizer was fluffed by Memphis Depay when he missed a 72nd minute penalty.

Barcelona have now failed to score a single goal in 4 consecutive away games for the first time in 25 years.

They have also failed to register a single win in their first 5 away games for the first time in 35 years.

Meanwhile, Rayo Vallecano are now in 5th with 19 points from 11 games while Barcelona are in 9th with 15 points from 10 games.

After the loss, Barcelona sacked Ronald Koeman as coach.

Barcelona will host Alaves next, while Rayo Vallecano will play Celta Vigo.

Other La Liga results on Wednesday evening saw Borja Iglesias score a brace in Real Betis’ 4-1 win over Valencia while Real Mallorca and Sevilla played a 1-1 draw.

Real Madrid failed to take advantage against Osasuna as they played out a 0-0 draw at the Santiago Bernabeau on Wednesday evening.

Real Madrid went into the game on the back of back to back victories including a win in the El Clasico on Sunday.

The visitors went into the game in confident form after 4 wins and a draw in their last 5 matches before the game.

Real Madrid are still on top of the table but joint alongside Sevilla, Betis and Real Sociedad all on 21 points albeit Betis has played a game more than the rest.

On Thursday, Levante will host Atletico Madrid, Granada will play Getafe and Celta Vigo will face Real Sociedad.
