Bayern Munich hit by right-back crisis as Laimer faces lengthy layoff

Bayern Munich’s impressive Bundesliga campaign has hit a snag with the news that versatile right-back Konrad Laimer will be sidelined for several weeks due to a calf injury.

The 28-year-old Austrian international suffered a muscle tear in his left calf during the team’s commanding 3-1 victory over Koln on Wednesday, a match that saw Bayern equal their own record for the strongest start to a season, amassing 47 points from 17 games.

The injury occurred amid an otherwise triumphant outing for Vincent Kompany’s side, which continues to dominate the league standings.

Post-match, Kompany downplayed concerns over minor knocks to star striker Harry Kane and defender Hiroki Ito, suggesting they were not serious.

However, Laimer’s issue prompted an immediate scan, and on Thursday, the club officially confirmed the tear, stating he would be unavailable “for the foreseeable future.”

Speculation from medical reports indicates the recovery timeline could range from two to eight weeks, depending on the severity of the tear.

This development exacerbates Bayern’s defensive woes, particularly at right-back, where options are already depleted.

Key players Josip Stanisic and Joshua Kimmich remain out with their own injuries, leaving Kompany scrambling for solutions in a position critical to the team’s fluid, attacking style.

Laimer has been a cornerstone for Bayern in the 2025-26 season, proving his reliability and versatility under Kompany’s management.

He has featured in 30 matches, starting 25 of them, trailing only Harry Kane and Michael Olise, who have each appeared 32 times.

His contributions extend beyond defense; Laimer has netted two goals and delivered seven assists, placing him among the squad’s top creators.

Only Olise (with 15 assists) and the duo of Luis Diaz and Serge Gnabry (10 each) have outpaced him in that category.

As Bayern prepares for upcoming fixtures, including high-stakes clashes in domestic and European competitions, Kompany may need to improvise.

Potential stand-ins could include shifting midfielders or promoting from the youth ranks, but Laimer’s absence risks disrupting the rhythm of a squad that has been firing on all cylinders.

Fans and analysts alike will watch closely to see how the Bavarian giants adapt to this setback, especially with their unbeaten run under threat.

The injury highlights the fragility of even the most dominant teams, underscoring the need for depth in a grueling season.

Bayern’s medical team will monitor Laimer’s progress, aiming for a swift return to bolster their title charge.
