Liverpool defender Andy Robertson has said he would like to remain at Anfield beyond the end of his contract this summer, but admitted his future remains uncertain as he weighs up his desire for regular football.
The 31-year-old Scotland international said discussions have taken place with the club, though no decision has yet been made.
Robertson, who has five months left on his current deal, said the next step would be to consider his options alongside his family.
While stressing his enjoyment of being a Liverpool player, he acknowledged that his reduced role this season has been a significant change after years as a guaranteed starter.
“I’m a player who wants to play,” he said, adding that sitting on the bench long-term is not something he finds easy to accept.
Since arriving from Hull City for £8m in 2017, Robertson has made 362 appearances for Liverpool and been a central figure in one of the club’s most successful modern eras.
However, he has started just four Premier League matches this season, with 22-year-old Milos Kerkez established as first-choice left-back following his £40m move from Bournemouth last summer.
Robertson said his lack of minutes is different from anything he has experienced previously, noting that he has often played through injuries or at less than full fitness to help club and country.
While he has embraced a different role this season and believes he has performed well when called upon, he reiterated that top-level footballers should always want to push for a place in the team.
Despite the uncertainty, Robertson emphasised that his relationship with Liverpool remains strong.
After Trent Alexander-Arnold’s departure last summer, Robertson was appointed vice-captain, and he said his dialogue with senior figures at the club has been open and respectful throughout the process.
Reflecting on his time at Anfield, Robertson said he has given “absolutely everything” to Liverpool over the past eight and a half years and feels that commitment has been mutual.
