Alexander Blessin has been officially confirmed as Borussia Mönchengladbach’s new head coach. 

The 53-year-old former St. Pauli manager signed a contract running until 2028 and replaces Eugen Polanski, who was dismissed earlier this month after a disastrous start to the campaign.

Blessin will be formally unveiled at a press conference at Borussia-Park on Wednesday afternoon, where sporting director Rouven Schröder will also speak. 

The appointment comes as the club seeks stability after four straight Bundesliga defeats that have left Die Fohlen bottom of the table with no points in the 2026/27 season.

Blessin’s coaching path began in the youth ranks at RB Leipzig, where he developed under Ralf Rangnick. 

He then took senior roles at KV Oostende in Belgium, Genoa in Italy, and Union Saint-Gilloise, where he enjoyed notable success, including a Belgian Cup triumph. 

His most recent post was at FC St. Pauli. After guiding the Hamburg club through their first season back in the top flight, he departed following their relegation at the end of last term.

At Gladbach, Blessin inherits a side in urgent need of improvement, particularly defensively, after a historically poor opening that has already seen heavy concessions. 

The international break offers him time to work with the squad before their next league fixture, an away Rhine derby against 1. FC Cologne on 11 October.

Supporters and the board will hope the experienced coach can quickly instill organizationn and resulty. 

With a multi-year deal in place, Blessin has the platform to rebuild confidence and lift Borussia Mönchengladbach away from the relegation zone as the season progresses.

It’s a breath of fresh air at the club as fortunes look to change rapidly under Alexander Blessin’s reign.
