Chelsea were comfortable as they took a first-leg advantage in the semi-final Carabao Cup clash against London rivals Tottenham at Stamford bridge.
In the quarterfinal, the Blues got past stubborn Brentford with a 2-0 win, albeit both goals came in late. However, the case was different on Wednesday evening as Chelsea were domineering from kick-off.
It was no surprise when German forward Kai Havertz opened the scoring for the Blues in the fifth minute of the game before an own goal doubled Chelsea’s advantage 8 minutes later.
There were no more goals to be scored in the game, but Thomas Tuchel’s side will go into the second leg with a 2-goal advantage while looking forward to the weekend’s clash with Chesterfield in the FA high on confidence.
Meanwhile, Romelu Lukaku made a return to the Blues starting line after a controversial weekend, although there was little to be remembered from his participation in the game.
Tuchel had revealed on Tuesday that the Belgian striker will remain a member of the team despite the interview he granted where he revealed his displeasure at his situation at the club.
While reflecting on the game on Wednesday evening, the German and former Borussia Dortmund manager expressed that the win was a deserved win.
“It seems like a deserved win, an excellent result because it reflects the game, we could have scored more but it is hard to score against Tottenham. We did create a lot, some huge chances, it could hve been possible to score more, the up side is everybody knows it is going to be a tough match, it is not decided yet.” Tuchel said.
Meanwhile, Arsenal’s clash with Liverpool has been postponed after a Covid outbreak in the Reds squad. The Gunners may not be in action in FA Cup at the weekend with their opponents, Nottingham Forest facing a similar problem.
