Coach defends substitution in Brazil’s draw against Costa Rica

Brazil head coach Dorival Junior has revealed the reason behind his decision to make some substitutions in the team’s goalless draw against Costa Rica in their opening group stage game at the Copa America.

Brazil failed to break down Costa Rica in a frustrating 0-0 draw in Group D at SoFi Stadium on June 24, 2024, in Inglewood, California. However, it was not just the score line that caught the attention; it was also some elements of the game, majorly coach Dorival Junior’s decision to substitute Real Madrid forward Vinicius Junior.

The 62-year-old revealed that the Real Madrid striker is one of the best players in the team and the team’s greatest hope in attack, but the inability to get through and find the net forced the coaching crew to look for a solution, which ended with Brazil bringing up teenager Endrick for Vini.

However, he insisted that the team was well-structured and that they increased the level and tempo of the game in order to win second balls, although he admitted that despite alternative plans, his team couldn’t finish the game in the well-contested fixture.

“I think it was a well-contested match. Unfortunately, working our way inward, we had some difficulties. We created great opportunities. There was a good flow of passes, but we were not able to score. But I think that we did show very positive elements.” Dorival said.

Despite Vinicius junior’s incredible form for Real Madrid in the just concluded season, where he led the Los Blancos to a Champions League and La Liga double, he was unable to lead Brazil to a victory against Costa Rica, especially in the absence of his club teammate, Rodrygo.

The result is the first time since 1960 that Brazil will fail to beat Costa Rica despite having Marquinhos hit the back of the net 30 minutes into the game, although his effort was ruled out by a lengthy VAR check.
