Comparing Cavani and Icardi’s record in PSG line up

After signing a four deal with Paris Saint Germain after an initial loan deal, Mauro Icardi will have to continue from where he stopped in the Paris club after finally leaving Inter Milan.

But PSG’s all-time scorer, Edison Cavani, who has found his playing time reduced due to the arrival of the Argentine will have to decide whether he is staying to fight for his shirt beyond the summer transfer.

This article will look at the record of the duo. Since Cavani was out injured mostly last year due to injury and had been playing from the bench, we will look at his 2018-2019 record while we will look at the present record of Icardi, who joined in the summer.

Presently, PSG manager Thomas Tuchel prefers Icardi in the final third to Cavani. Still, he had put the Urugyuan at the forefront of the team’s attack in the final weeks of the season. This may be because PSG was already having a 21-points lead before they were declared the winner.

A look at Icardi’s inaugural season at the Parc De Prince Stadium showed that he found the back of the net 12 times in 20 Ligue 1 Conforama games, compared to Edinson Cavani’s four goals in 14 league games.

After sustaining a hip injury in February, Cavani ended the 2018-19 season with 21 league matches, which is a better goal ratio than that of Icardi’s record in 2019-20, which was cut short by the coronavirus pandemic.

Cavani was in the starting line-up 95% of the time he was fit and was the standing 9, but Icardi got into the starting line-up 70% of the time. This resulted in a significant difference in playing time (1675 playing minutes for Cavani; 1268 for Icardi, which is more than four games).

The 18 goals scored by Cavani in 21 games and 12 goals scored by Icardi in 20 games appear the Argentine is more effective than the Uruguayan because he is not a penalty taker for PSG. From the 18 scored by Cavani, five was from the penalty spot.
