Petrovic joins Bournemouth from Chelsea

Bournemouth has signed Chelsea goalkeeper Djordje Petrovic for £25 million, the club announced. The 25-year-old Serbian international joins on a five-year contract, becoming the Cherries’ third signing of the summer.

Petrovic spent last season on loan at Ligue 1 side Strasbourg, where he was named player of the season, helping the team secure a Europa Conference League spot.

Petrovic, who has seven Serbia caps, made 23 Premier League appearances for Chelsea across two seasons. He is expected to become Bournemouth’s first-choice goalkeeper after Kepa Arrizabalaga’s departure to Arsenal.

Petrovic expressed his excitement about joining Bournemouth, stating, “I came to Bournemouth because I want to grow and I want to play at the best level. Together with this club, with these facilities, I think we can achieve it.”

The signing marks a significant investment for Bournemouth, who have been looking to strengthen their squad after Kepa’s loan spell last season.

Petrovic’s impressive performances at Strasbourg, where he made 31 appearances and kept 10 clean sheets, caught the attention of Bournemouth’s recruitment team.

Chelsea signed Petrovic for £14 million in 2023 from MLS side New England Revolution. Despite showing flashes of potential, Petrovic lost his place as Chelsea’s first-choice goalkeeper under Enzo Maresca to Robert Sanchez. Bournemouth’s move provides Petrovic with an opportunity for regular first-team football.

Petrovic’s signing is part of Bournemouth’s efforts to build a strong squad for the upcoming Premier League season. With his skills and experience, Petrovic is expected to make a significant contribution to the team’s success.

Bournemouth’s investment in Petrovic demonstrates their commitment to competing at the highest level in the Premier League.

Meanwhile, the club is still looking at ways of getting rid of players who are excess to requirements. The duo of João Félix and Christopher Nkunku are on the list of the next players that the newly crowned FIFA Club World Cup winners want to sell.
