Real Madrid have reportedly reached a preliminary agreement with goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois over a contract extension that would keep him at the Santiago Bernabeu until June 2028.
The Belgian international’s current deal expires in June 2027, but the Spanish giants are keen to secure his future for another season.
According to Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano, both parties are close to finalizing the agreement, with the proposed extension expected to cover the 2027-2028 campaign.
Spanish media reports in September also indicated that negotiations were progressing toward a deal until June 30, 2028.
Madrid consider Courtois a key figure in their long-term plans and are determined to retain his services rather than begin the search for a replacement.
Since joining from Chelsea in 2018, the goalkeeper has established himself as one of the club’s most important players, earning a reputation for delivering decisive performances in domestic and European competitions.
One of Courtois’ most memorable displays came in the 2022 UEFA Champions League final against Liverpool.
His outstanding saves helped Real Madrid secure a 1-0 victory and claim their 14th European Cup title.
The Belgian was named man of the match after a series of crucial stops denied Liverpool’s attackers.
At 34, Courtois remains Madrid’s undisputed first-choice goalkeeper, and his experience and consistency continue to make him an essential part of the squad.
His ability to perform under pressure has strengthened the club’s confidence in extending his stay, even as they plan for the future.
The Belgian’s career at Madrid has not been without setbacks. A serious knee injury in 2023 kept him out of action for an extended period, raising concerns over his availability.
However, Courtois recovered, reclaimed his position, and continued to demonstrate why he remains one of the leading goalkeepers of his generation.
Although the club has yet to officially announce the reported agreement, the move would give Madrid continuity in goal for another season.
Courtois is expected to remain central to Madrid’s ambitions in La Liga and the Champions League as the club looks to stay competitive at the highest level.
