Violence erupted at Ibrox Stadium on Sunday after Celtic defeated arch rival Rangers in a dramatic Scottish Cup quarter-final, with fans from both sides clashing on the pitch moments after the final whistle.
The heated Old Firm encounter ended with Celtic progressing to the semi-finals after a tense penalty shoot-out, but the post-match scenes overshadowed the result as supporters from both clubs confronted each other on the field.
Trouble began when dozens of Celtic fans ran onto the pitch to celebrate their team’s victory in front of the away section. Their pitch invasion quickly triggered a reaction from the home crowd, as hundreds of Rangers supporters surged forward in an attempt to confront their rivals.
Missiles and pyrotechnics were thrown during the chaotic moments that followed, forcing police officers and stadium stewards to intervene. Security personnel eventually formed a barrier across the pitch, separating the opposing groups of supporters.
Even after being held apart, fans from both sides continued shouting insults across the line of security before order was finally restored.
The incident occurred during the first Old Firm derby in nearly a decade to feature a significant number of away supporters. In previous seasons, visiting fans had been largely banned from attending these fixtures after repeated clashes between rival supporters.
The restrictions were first imposed in 2023 following several violent incidents involving fans. Away supporters were allowed to return last year, though only in limited numbers. The Scottish Cup tie at Ibrox, which saw around 7,500 Celtic fans in attendance, was viewed as an important test ahead of potentially increasing away allocations in the future.
However, Sunday’s disturbances could jeopardize those plans.
On the pitch, the match itself proved to be a tense and defensive contest. Neither side managed to score during regular time or extra-time, resulting in a penalty shoot-out to decide the winner.
Celtic ultimately triumphed 4–2 on penalties despite failing to register a single shot on target during the entire 120 minutes of play. Rangers captain James Tavernier struck the crossbar with the opening penalty before Djeidi Gassama also missed, blazing his effort over the bar.
Tomas Cvancara then converted the decisive spot-kick to secure Celtic’s place in the semi-finals.
“There were a few tete-a-tetes. It’s unfortunate. Hopefully it doesn’t dilute the performance,” said Celtic manager Martin O’Neill after the match.
“It was our fourth game in 10 days and we were really out on our feet, but we defended magnificently. Blocks, boys throwing their bodies on the line. I’ve got the utmost regard for the team.”
He added: “Old Firm games are explosive games, they always have been. That’s maybe one of the reasons why the derby is one of the best in the world.”
For Rangers, the defeat added to a difficult week after they surrendered a two-goal lead in a 2-2 league draw against Celtic at the same venue last weekend. Both Glasgow giants are currently chasing Hearts in the Scottish Premiership title race.
