Real Madrid are reportedly preparing to part ways with club legend Dani Carvajal at the end of the season, a move that could hand Trent Alexander-Arnold full control of the right-back position at the Spanish giants.
According to reports in Spain, the club have decided not to offer the veteran defender a contract extension beyond June after a difficult and injury-hit campaign.
The decision comes amid a disappointing season for Real Madrid, who are set to finish without a major trophy for a second consecutive year.
The club currently sit second in La Liga, well behind rivals FC Barcelona, and performances across the campaign have raised concerns within the hierarchy about the future of several senior players.
Carvajal’s struggles with injuries have played a major role in the club’s decision.
The 34-year-old has managed only 20 appearances in all competitions this season after suffering repeated knee and muscle problems.
A recent foot fracture has now ruled him out for the remainder of the domestic campaign, ending his hopes of earning a place in Spain’s squad for the upcoming World Cup.
While Carvajal’s season has been plagued by fitness setbacks, Alexander-Arnold has also endured injury frustrations during his first year in Madrid.
Despite missing matches through hamstring and muscle problems, the England international has still featured 26 times across La Liga and the Champions League, clocking more than 1,500 minutes for the club.
Reports have also suggested that tensions developed behind the scenes between Carvajal and the coaching staff during the season.
Manager Alvaro Arbeloa refused to address speculation surrounding the relationship when questioned by reporters, dismissing the issue as an inappropriate topic.
The reported breakdown, combined with the defender’s limited availability, is believed to have further weakened his standing within the squad.
If confirmed, Carvajal’s departure would mark the end of an era for one of Real Madrid’s most decorated defenders and a six-time Champions League winner.
It would also signal the beginning of a new chapter for Alexander-Arnold, who is expected to become the club’s undisputed first-choice right-back as Madrid begin rebuilding ahead of next season.
