Manchester United beat Liverpool to seal Champions League return

Manchester United secured a return to the UEFA Champions League with a dramatic 3-2 victory over fierce rivals Liverpool at Old Trafford on Sunday.

The result confirmed United’s place among the Premier League’s top five and ensured they will compete in Europe’s elite competition next season after a two-year absence.

The home side made a blistering start under manager Michael Carrick, taking the lead after just six minutes through Matheus Cunha.

United doubled their advantage eight minutes later when Benjamin Sesko finished clinically to put the hosts firmly in control before half-time.

Liverpool struggled to cope with United’s intensity during the opening period and went into the break trailing 2-0.

The visitors responded strongly after the restart as Dominik Szoboszlai pulled a goal back in the 47th minute to spark hopes of a comeback.

Momentum swung further in Liverpool’s favour when Cody Gakpo equalised in the 56th minute, finishing after being set up by Szoboszlai.

The equaliser silenced the Old Trafford crowd and left United facing the possibility of missing out on automatic qualification for the Champions League.

However, United regained control midway through the second half thanks to academy graduate Kobbie Mainoo.

The midfielder struck in the 77th minute to restore the hosts’ lead, sending the home supporters into celebration.

United then held firm during a tense closing period, with goalkeeper Senne Lammens making important interventions and Liverpool unable to find a late equaliser despite sustained pressure.

The victory continued an impressive home record for Carrick, who has now won eight of his first nine Premier League home matches as manager.

For Liverpool and manager Arne Slot, the defeat intensified frustration after a poor first-half display proved costly.

Although Liverpool improved significantly after the interval, they left Old Trafford empty-handed and still needing points to secure their own Champions League place.

The loss also prompted criticism from sections of supporters, with some questioning Slot’s tactical decisions after another damaging result in the Premier League title race and top-five battle.
