Dembele’s redemption: From Barcelona flop to Ballon d’Or contender at PSG

Once labeled one of football’s most expensive flops, Ousmane Dembele is now on the brink of completing a stunning turnaround as he prepares to lead Paris Saint-Germain into the UEFA Champions League final against Inter Milan.

The French winger, whose €148 million transfer to Barcelona in 2017 failed to meet expectations, has emerged as PSG’s talisman in 2025, with many tipping him as a frontrunner for the Ballon d’Or.

Dembele’s early years at Barcelona were plagued by injury, inconsistency, and a lack of discipline. Despite undeniable natural talent, he struggled with professionalism, arriving late to training, maintaining poor dietary habits, and failing to establish himself in the team.

Even club legends and coaches who acknowledged his gifts questioned his attitude and commitment. By the time he left for PSG in 2023, both parties seemed ready for a fresh start.

At PSG, however, Dembele initially showed little improvement. His first season brought just three league goals, and he was even dropped from the squad for a Champions League tie in October 2024 due to disciplinary issues.

Many critics believed the Frenchman was once again wasting his potential. But instead of spiraling further, that moment became a turning point in his career.

A tactical switch in December proved pivotal. PSG coach Luis Enrique moved Dembele from the wing into a central attacking role, essentially reinventing him as a striker. The results have been extraordinary: 25 goals and 6 assists in 2025 alone, making him the most productive player across Europe’s top five leagues this year.

Enrique praised his movement and one-touch finishing, while Kylian Mbappe, now at Real Madrid, lauded his former teammate’s newfound composure and maturity.

The transformation has brought silverware as well. Dembele was named Ligue 1 Player of the Year after helping PSG clinch the league title, and he now has the chance to guide the club to their first-ever Champions League trophy.

His performances in the knockout stages against Liverpool and Arsenal underlined his evolution from flashy winger to reliable game-changer, earning admiration from teammates and fans alike.

Whether or not he lifts the Ballon d’Or, Dembele’s resurgence is one of football’s most remarkable redemption arcs. From being labeled a liability at Barcelona to becoming the heartbeat of PSG, the 28-year-old appears to have finally combined talent with the right mentality.

As PSG prepares for their historic showdown in Munich, one thing is clear: Ousmane Dembele is no longer just a player of promise—he’s now a player of impact.
