Borussia Dortmund and Fluminense played out a 0-0 draw in their Club World Cup Group F match at Metlife Stadium in East Rutherford, near New York City, on Tuesday. Brazilian teams remain unbeaten in the tournament.

Fluminense, based in Rio de Janeiro, posed the greater threat. Early on, Dortmund goalkeeper Gregor Kobel parried a shot from Jhon Arias. Matheus Martinelli also fired just wide for Fluminense. 

Led by 40-year-old captain Thiago Silva, formerly of Paris Saint-Germain and Chelsea, Fluminense were dangerous on counterattacks. Agustin Canobbio missed a clear chance in the second half, shooting directly at Kobel, who later made an excellent low save to deny Everaldo.

Dortmund, managed by Niko Kovac, struggled to create chances. Teenage English midfielder Jobe Bellingham, recently signed from Sunderland, made his debut as a substitute.

A late long-range effort from Niklas Sule was Dortmund’s best attempt. Kovac, whose team placed fourth in the Bundesliga, noted that the playing conditions affected the match.

Fluminense’s attacking rhythm was evident, but their finishing let them down. Silva’s leadership at the back ensured Dortmund rarely threatened, with the veteran defender organizing a compact defense. 

The Metlife Stadium pitch, criticized for its uneven surface, disrupted both teams’ passing games, leading to a scrappy affair at times.

Dortmund’s fans, who traveled in numbers, were vocal but left disappointed by their team’s lack of creativity. Fluminense supporters, meanwhile, celebrated their side’s resilience. 

The match highlighted the growing competitiveness of Brazilian clubs in global tournaments, with Fluminense matching a European giant. 

Dortmund will seek their first tournament win against Mamelodi Sundowns next, while Fluminense aim to maintain their unbeaten run. This stalemate sets up an intriguing battle for Group F supremacy.
